The Dirty Palette Club Back In Action

After a spell yesterday the DPCC got back together at mi casa for an afternoon of jokes, goofing, art-talk and of course painting a crazy still life! It had been a while since we gathered in my house to paint, our last gatherings had been to see art or plein air paint, so it was fun to hang with the gang and paint away like we started a few years back now. Will did a handsome portrait of me and you can see an in-progress of it abouve.

Here is our crazy still life setup-we called it the Two Towers.

This pictures is was taken as a little while later as I started slapping on the paint.

This is the final painting, I had to bum paint off Dave and Will as I left all my paints at school, so I will need to put a little retouch varnish on this to bring up the colors even as the darker colors sunk in a bit. There was so much fun stuff to paint in this piece, from the little Mickey head to the pig yp the faint blue reflected light on the wall next to the ecroche.

Will's final painting of me. We plan on getting together weekly now like we did in the past to just hangout and paint in the looser and congenial atmosphere of the DPC.

DPC Summer Studio-- Session 4

The DPC started our summer session this last week in the studio. It wasn't a full tilt group as two or three of our regular members either haven't moved in yet or couldn't make it, but Dave, Lexi and I set up a little still life and went about painting into the evening in the new gang studio. The shot above is of my side of the studio which has great views of the city and south light.

Here is my painting after I got it pretty well blocked in--still a ways to go on this but I feel its a good start. Once again its a great thing to have the energy and camaraderie of good friends around when working. I like the energy and flow of ideas you get as well as the laughter. I want to employ some of the "thinking" on creating a space and an arrangement of values and atmosphere I got from the workshop I just took with Peter Van Dyke. i can't wait to get back into the studio this week!

Meeting 10

Today was our 10th meeting of the DPC, but it was lightly attended, only Will and myself painted. Chuck my buddy from next door and our model for our previous weeks portrait painting stopped by for Pizza. Since time was short and Will and I figured we'd set up a simple still life for this evenings painting. We'll set a longer still life next week when the rest of the DPC would returns to our illustrious club. Above is my painting of the three apple still life and is roughly 3 hours of work. 11 x 14 on canvas.

I am also happy to announce that three of the DPC got paintings accepted into the Philadelphia Sketch Club's annual Art of the Flower competition. Congratulation's to Dave, Will and Christina! All of the paintings were almost hanging together.
